Artist Statement

In a world dominated by virtual cyber-reality and franchise-dotted towns and cities the particularities of the natural world are of great interest to me. Each place holds different patterns, rhythms, colors, sounds, and shapes. I observe the lay of the land, the way light falls on the earth and plants, shadows, the shapes of leaves, the flow of water, sounds of birds, temperature, color, air movement, smells and even tastes. After noticing all of these qualities a new intimacy emerges with my surroundings. Sensually examining my physical environment creates an active relationship with place and provides me with material for my paintings. This new perspective reached through observation and experience through painting brings greater understanding in my artistic practice and greater fulfillment to me in my observations of nature. In my case intimacy is akin to inspiration.

Painting

Painting in watercolor is a form of relaxation for me. Experimentation and enjoyment of the medium and explorations into color and design led to the development of my abstract, graphic interpretations of plants, animals, landscapes and other natural phenomena. My watercolors reflect a stream-of-consciousness process founded in my fascination with natural forms, shapes and colors. I offer them as originals, limited edition prints and cards. I also use my drawing and painting skills to plan and illustrate my projects and embellish my handmade books. I hope that through my work viewers feel an up-welling of admiration for and celebration of the beauty of the natural world.

Book Making

My fascination with books stems from their history as containers of information and records, tools of communication and vehicles through which to share ideas both written and visual. My books are made from a combination of archival and recycled materials, original handmade papers, collage, watercolor, glycee prints and found natural materials. Using different European and Asian binding techniques, I create a variety of styles and sizes including blank books, journals, quote books and limited edition art books.
